WE BRING
YOU OVER

(DIGIBEAT LIMEY)

Saturday morning. Feeling great.
One simple plan: make an R&B song.

THE PLAN

MAKE AN
R&B SONG.

Paul got up one Saturday morning feeling great and decided he wanted to make an R&B track.

It didn't happen.

We Bring You Over happened instead.

THE SONG KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING.
“Oh no, the tunes don't go down like I want them to sound”

It means just that. The intended song wasn't appearing, so the failure to make it became part of the song that was.

WORDS & MUSIC

LYRICS

The complete lyric text is preserved from the original paulcruse.com page. Original wording and spelling have been retained.

Oh no here we go, take it fast take it slow
rockin' with the beat that still don't make a show
calling all the massive in the UK with my flow
will I be a player T.B.C. 'cus I do not know

And never seem to get a gig that did not blow
never once got out, never wanna sit down
now you see what you got, never mind it's not a lot
pour another coffee, put another brew on the pot.

I got my beats but I don't get a rockin' rythym
when they don't dig a hit I don't go with 'em
Shyin' all the time like a church goin' sinner
tryin' all the time to big it up and be a winner

Wouldn't it be a fact if the tune on the radio sound
like a little tune I gave an' had the presence to put it down
'n' now my bank balance in the brown, save a little to freak the town
'n' the tunes did make me proud.. never mind, I'm still around

Oh, oh, the tunes don't go down like I wan'em to sound
No ho's, the ho's aren't quin' up, never mind I'm still around

Oh, oh, the tunes don't go down like I wan'em to sound
No flow, loose the back beat, pick it up don't stop go.

I got my chose'd whip, never mind the two step
I did just enough to give me a chance to choose it
now I wanna sell it, but I don't wanna loose it
so I sit starin' at it wishin' I could Cruse it.

I wanna put another there, but I gotta go through it
'N' spend all my days tellin' myself I'm gonna do it.
now you'll see me in time takin' dimes with my rhymin'
If I had big balls I'd get my song to do a climbin'
I can hear the bells ding dong hear them chimin
A little bit of future lying here behind me
tour the world with my sound, rock the hall cor blimey
see the floor get down to the digital limey.

Pack my sh** in a truck, leave the brave to pick it up
save all my paper back home to spend, yep!

Oh, oh, the tunes don't go down like I wan'em to sound
No flow, loose the back beat, pick it up don't stop go.

So the short and tall of the digi beat rhyme is
try to honest with the song 'cus it ignites it
take a brave decision see the world through a fly beat
save your soul, get down to the digi beat limey.

THE RESULT

Don't correct it into becoming something else.

The track became its own odd mixture: self-aware, frustrated, funny and stubbornly optimistic — a song about trying to make music while the music itself refuses to follow instructions.

THEN CAME THE VIDEO

THE VIDEO
DIDN'T
DISAPPOINT.

The same rule seems to have applied to the filming. Things went wrong. They stayed in.

01

CAMERA FALLS OVER.

LEAVE IT IN.
02

RECORDING UPSIDE DOWN.

LEAVE IT IN.
03

CLOSE-UPS THAT PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE CLOSE-UPS.

LEAVE THEM IN.
04

WASP ATTACKS THE GUITAR SOLO.

KEEP PLAYING.

Filming the solo in the garage, Paul has to move his head as a wasp investigates the light bulb — then charges out of the garage towards the camera.

05

DOG PHOTOBOMBS THE DOG-WASTE-BIN SHOT.

OF COURSE.
06

UNIDENTIFIED FEATHERY AFTERMATH ON THE GRASS.

DISCOVER IT 15 YEARS LATER.

A frame of Paul in a red-and-white striped top with his guitar appears also to contain the remains of an unfortunate pigeon encounter. Exactly what happened is unknowable from the photograph.

THE ORIGINAL VIDEO

Nothing tidied up for posterity.

The accidents are part of the surviving record: the camera, the framing, the garage, the wasp and everything else that wandered into shot.

AND AFTER ALL THAT...

NEVER MIND,
I'M STILL
AROUND.

A line written into a song that wasn't supposed to exist turns out to have travelled rather well.
